Great Play: No, Thank YOU Mark Tauscher

In case you missed it, Mark Tauscher - offensive tackle for both the Green Bay Packers and the Wisconsin Badgers before - took out a large advertisement in the Milwaukee Journal/Sentinel this past Sunday. Tauscher was born in Wisconsin and played a total of 16 years for Wisconsin college and professional football. He was cut by the Packers this past July due after rotator cuff surgery that ended his 12 year career. Unlike some other not-to-be-named athletes that can't let go, Tauscher ended his career gracefully and never said a word against the Packers' move. You can see his ad here.

In the ad he says "It has been an honor and a privilege to live out a childhood dream by playing my entire football career in Wisconsin." but I would like to turn the tables and say it has been an honor and a privilege to have him play for Wisconsin teams. For 16 years he opened holes for our running backs and protected our quarterbacks during seasons that exceeded the normal expectations of Wisconsin sports.

Tauscher is a good guy off the field too. He was married in July of 09 and has a son, Maxwell. He is educated - holding a master's degree in educational administration and continues his graduate studies through UW-Madison. Besides his on-field accomplishments (like not getting flagged for holding for six years) he was named Packers' 2008 Walter Payton Man of the Year and voted Packers' 2008 Ed Block Courage Award winner.

He even has his own charity called the Trifecta Foundation that focuses on enhancing the education and literacy of children in Wisconsin. Funds raised by the foundation help meet local literacy needs and will be used to promote creative learning experiences in and out of the classroom.

DEI Creates Opportunities, Doesn't Lower Requirements

Companies have been being attacked recently for DEI initiatives, such as boycotting, to force them to undo those efforts. These attacks are typically dog whistle coding to cover up discrimination against minorities including women and people of color. The narrative is typically that hiring standards are lowered to include a wider range of employees and that it is a form of reverse discrimination - disadvantaging one group (people that are one or more of white, male, and cisgender). But not only is this not the case, in fact, DEI initiatives are proven to strengthen companies' performance across many metrics - even financially.
