Make Men's Health Month About You

The month of November is (one of the) Men's Health Month(s), popularized by the Movember movement. (June is another recognized annual event but since it is November now, November it is.) It's a great foundation, it has been successful and is highly rated for its impact. But, one thing I see with the movement is that while they speak about men's health to the participants, I feel the participants themselves promote it outwardly rather than inward, at them. I personally fell victim to that selfsame issue, but no longer. As of this November, I am taking care of myself.

Scentsory Kicks Off 10%Tuesday Giving With Gentleman's Ride

An example of what the rides and riders of the DGR look like, classic personal style matched with their bikes. It's uncommon for men to think too much about personal hygiene products. We go to the store, grab one of the major brands for things like anitperspirant, shaving, etc., but, just like with our general health, rarely do we think about what is in them that may impact our own health & well-being let alone others' or the environment. This is changing with more diversity of product types nearing a percentage of what is available to women - facial cleansers, skin care, and so on - and indeed there are some brands even at big box stores that embrace more natural care like Burt's Bees, Everyman Jack, and Schmidt's among others. With beards and styled facial hair being more popular, men are also embracing care of . One local shop, Scentsory Bath & Body Boutique in Cedarburg, is addressing the growing demand for personal hygiene products for men with handmad...

It's Mo Time Again 2017 MIlwaukee Movember

I'll keep it short and sweet. It's the end of October. That means November is almost upon us. And November is the month of Movember  the only charity tackling men’s health on a global scale, year round. They address some of the biggest health issues faced by men: prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and mental health and suicide prevention. Movember is continuing their promotion of general health with their MOVE initiative along with the moustache awareness & fundraising efforts. Get involved here . For years Milwaukee has had and continues to have some of the coolest man-friendly socially responsible events around as organized by the guys at Movember MKE ,  our very own ambassadors for men's health issues. As always, we are happy to help promote Movember and all the events associated, check out our calendar of compiled events here . If you are looking for inspiration for your moustache, check out the new style guide.

MOVEmber Adds New Way To Participate

This post could, should, have come a few weeks ago - before the month started so everyone could get involved. Alas, I did not, but there's still time to get involved, and even to carry it on, my wayward son. It is the middle of November, and that means we are also in the middle of Movember - the by now well known men's health movement that has focused on first prostate cancer, added mental health, and now with a different way to look at the word, physical health in general. While it usually is looked at as Mo-vember, mo as in moustache where men grow facial hair for awareness, this year they realized it can also be Move-mber. In this case the ' Move Challenge ' stresses increasing physical activity for the month to increase men's overall physical and with it mental health. Instead of (or in addition to) growing a moustache you can do and track exercise for the month.

Packers' Eddie Lacy Joins The Mo Bros For Movember

In past years Green Bay Packers players and coaches have participated in Movember, most notably Mr. Rodgers and McCarthy . This year, second year player and first round draft pick (and my fantasy football first round pick over a certain other RB who has had legal issues) Eddie Lacy is joining in. Eddie is growing a mo to raise awareness and has his own MoSpace at the Movember movement fundraising site. On his MoSpace, Lacy says that he is inspired by his parents who are both in healthcare to promote health to others. Like many men he used to avoid he conversation, now he is  the conversation.

Milwaukee Movember Events

It's that time of year again Mo Bros (and Mo Sistas) - time to take action to change the face of men's health - literally and figuratively. Men who participate in Movember (called Mo Bros) take action to change the face of men’s health by starting clean-shaven on Movember 1st and growing just a moustache (no beards, no goatees) for the month November. Movember is more than just an excuse to grow a fine piece of moustachery, it’s about creating conversations while raising funds and awareness for men’s health. It’s about having fun and doing good. In addition to general fundraising, many cities organize special events to promote and celebrate Movember, and Milwaukee throws down with the best of them. Here are all the events lined up for Milwaukee's 2014 Movember participation.

Movember Is Coming! Packer's Kuhn Is Ready.

It's just over a week now til November. Annually across the US and the world, and here at GMM, that means moving from one gender's cancer to another's. Each year November is celebrated as Movember - when men grow moustaches in order to raise awareness and funds for men's health including prostate cancer. Kuhn in the process of getting shaved This year, Green Bay Packers fan favorite John Kuhn and Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin Cancer Network are teaming up for “Green and Gold Movember,” a prostate cancer public awareness initiative encouraging men to grow out their facial hair during the month of November. Green and Gold Movember launched Oct. 21, 2014 when Kuhn, a two-time Super Bowl champion and Pro Bowl performer, shaved his trademark beard during a private kickoff event at Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin Froedtert Hospital campus. Video of his shave can be seen at this story on WISN .

Take Prostate Cancer to the Limit With Movie Screening

It seems its all about bikes for me lately. With Movember coming up, the Distinguished Gentleman's Ride isn't the only moto-related prostate cancer fundraiser. Hal’s Harley-Davidson is proud to support the Movember movement and changing the face of men’s health. They’re going to kick-off Movember a few weeks early by bringing in a special guest, Peter Starr, to share his story with you while raising funds for Prostate Cancer Education on Thursday, October 9th at 6pm.

11th Annual Milwaukee Oyster Roast Supports Movember

There are many reactions to losing a loved one, especially from a deadly disease, and one of them is to fight back. Those affected want to find a way to stop it from happening to other people's loved ones so they don't have to have the same experience. This fight can follow many usual ways form walks and rides to raffles and other standard fundraising fare. These are all tried and true methods and as is often sad, there's no reason to reinvent the wheel, however. Sometimes, just sometimes, people are inspired to follow their own path and out of that a unique and rare opportunity presents itself to all of us to get involved in other ways. That is one of the goals of GMM, to inspire fun and funky events geared towards an audience of men, and we love promoting when others step up and do just that. So we are happy to tell you about a great way to support men's health in Milwaukee in two weeks. On Saturday, April 26, the 11th Annual Milwaukee Oyster Roast , one of the m...

Birthday Thoughts: A Great Man Is One Who Is There

Today is my birthday. It falls in the middle of Movember , and this year happens to fall on the third Thursday of the month which is my monthly guys' night get together. At this stage in our lives most of us are husbands, many are fathers, but all are a son, or a brother - we are all special and needed by someone. Which makes me want to refocus our Movember discussion away from the spectacle of the stache and to what it's really about: men's health. After all, we can only be or become Great Men if we have the time to do so. So it is our number one responsibility to make sure we are around as long as we can be to be a Great Father, Husband, Partner, Brother, Son, Friend, and that means taking care of ourselves as much or more than we care for others, but for so many too many, men that is the last thing on their mind.

Turn Growing Into Grooming at The Art of Shaving

Through the wonders of the web I had heard about the store The Art of Shaving , but up until just over a year ago there was no way to experience it unless you went out of town. I was able to visit the Chicago one once, but then one opened up here in the Milwaukee area - in Wauwatosa specifically - at Mayfair Mall. Now that we have one here, you can experience it during a time when you can make it mean something. In the past, and this year once again, the store has participated in Movember.

Double Dip Your Donation With TOMS Movember Specials

I almost don't even know how to begin in this one since it hits home on so many levels, but I'll try since its too awesome to pass up. By now you know its Movember , if not catch up , and you should also know a goal of GMM is to promote socially conscious products specifically for men and have covered TOMS before . But this month TOMS has outdone themselves by not only doing their One for One  model but also donating money for every Movember product  sold to the cause. That means for every pair of Movember shoes bought TOMS is donating twice  - one pair of shoes to a needy child and money to Movember.

Be Local, Natural, AND Support Men's Health With Halo Soap's Moustache Soap

Here is a great deal for those of you growing a moustache for Movember, or any man with a stache year-round.  Halo Soap , with locations in Bay View and Cudahy, is making a whole line of moustache waxes and during every November, 50% of the sales from those products will go towards the Movember Foundation, and 20% of those sales during the rest of the year will be held until the following Movember. That means you can buy local, natural, AND support men's health - that's a home run in the Greater MKE Men's world. They make other men's products as well including man-friendly soaps like beer, bay rum, and coffee - even dirt, yes dirt  scent - as well as men's facial care products like after-shave a pre-shave oil which you can but on their Etsy store (see Etsy isn't just for women!)

Movember Is On The Horizon

It may only  be October 1st, but that doesn't mean we can't start looking a month ahead towards Movember . During November each year, during what is Pancreatic Cancer month, Movember is responsible for the sprouting of millions of moustaches on men's faces around the world. Through the power of the Mo, vital funds and awareness are raised to combat prostate and testicular cancer and mental health challenges. For the past few years, Miwaukee has embraced the Movember movement and been at its forefront in the US with various activities that Greater Milwaukee Men as supported. While we like to see new and varied activities, this year you can help raise funds with the standard run in addition to the plethora of activities that will be planned. The Mo Run Milwauke  will take place November 10th and their 2013 national charity is Movember.

Stache Some Cash For Men's Health

The month of October may be painted pink by a large health awareness campaign, but every year since 2004, November follows with a quickly growing campaign for men's health issues. The Movember movement rallies men to make themselves literally the face of prostate and testicular cancer initiatives by growing moustaches to raise awareness and funds for those causes. Since its humble beginnings in Melbourne, Australia, Movember has grown to become a truly global movement inspiring more than 1.9 Million Mo Bros and Mo Sistas to participate with formal campaigns in over a dozen countries including the US. By growing a moustache, men will often get asked about it which serves as an opening to talk about the movement and initiate the ask for support. This year, Well-Met is helping promote Movember events planned by the Milwaukee regional Network. Milwaukee Men participating on their own or as a team can link their efforts to the Milwaukee Network so we can show the world tha...

Movember Hosts Inaugural Global Prostate Cancer Survivorship Summit

Movember , an annual campaign started in Australia to raise awareness and funds for prostate cancer, uses November as a time to raise vital funds and awareness for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer and other cancers that affect men, by growing a moustache for the month of November. Men register for a fundraising page similar to walks, runs, and bike rides, but this time the race is to grow a fabulous mo. Men are to start November 1st clean shaven and for the rest of the month let their mo grow into a walking, talking billboards for the 30 days of November as people ask them about their mo which provides the opportunity to start private and public conversations around the often ignored issue of men’s health.

November Is Pancreatic Cancer Month

You may have seen my previous post on Movember - the November men's health month fundraising and awareness event. Well, there is a reason it is 'Movember' and not Moctober, or any other Mo month. That is because November is Pancreatic Cancer Month , via the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network .
