UW Football Most Admirable Program in NCAA

Edited Image of WSJ Grid of Shame from David Leavitt UW-Madison has one of, if not the, premier overall NCAA sports programs in the nation (even people outside our state are coming around to it like USA Today ,  CBS Sports , even rival Minnesota's  Star Tribune  had to admit it. Their recent, long-standing, records in men's basketball & football speak for themselves but they also have been consistently great in other sports as well across men's (hockey) and women's (hockey & volleyball) teams. Perhaps most impressive is the unprecedented and unequaled 15-year streak of the football team has playing in a bowl game and men's basketball team qualifying for the NCAA tournament (3 more years then the next longest). But definitely most impressive is that the university does it all while maintaining what the Wall Street Journal has named the Most Admirable program regarding academics, violations and probation, arrests, and other ways the program is run well wi...

FUEL kids studies in the RadioMilwaukee No Empty Backpacks Drive

I stopped in at the new FUEL Cafe south location on 5th Street and saw a donation box for the 88Nine Radio Milwaukee Second Annual  No Empty Backpacks School Supplies Drive   to benefit Milwaukee Public Schools students. In a partnership with  Milwaukee Business Journal   for the month of  August, donation bins will be at Radio Milwaukee in Walker’s Point, Milwaukee Business Journal,  BelAir Cantina  locations and select Educators Credit Union locations. FUEL isn't listed, but as a sister restaurant to BelAir they apparently are participating as well.

Iron Horse Hotel Helps BUILD Students' Futures

This is the winning bike from the  2013-14 BUILD season All things considered, it would always be my recommendation for youth to try their best to pursue higher education, whatever it may lead to. But some - confession myself included - just aren't cut out for the path of attending or finishing college after high school. For many, even with a degree, career pursuits that don't involve a college education's fruits are their path for one reason or another. For these people, getting a trade skill is very important but in today's education landscape that is becoming harder and harder as resources for public schools decline and the focus becomes more and more in higher education that may or may not be taken advantage of. Thankfully, there are programs to help young people get the skills they need to find a worthwhile and worthy career in manual trades. One such program is the BUILD Moto Mentor program started by the Iron Horse Hotel in Milwaukee which pairs local cus...

Braise Culinary School Introduction To Craft Spirits 10/30

Maybe its the fact its the day before Halloween, or two days before the launch of Movember, but the next Braise Culinary School's weekly Tuesday topic class as 'Introduction to Craft Spirits' seems just too perfect. Braise is a unique local food business comprising three parts: an RSA (restaurant supported agriculture), restaurant , and a culinary school all focusing on locally farmed food. Until I get a chance to do a proper review, (I have eaten there a few times, volunteered for an event, and attended one class so far) check out their web site for more information. At their culinary school they have classes Tuesdays and Thursdays. Thursdays are basic skills classes taught by chef and owner Dave Swanson himself while Tuesday classes are in lecture format featuring local experts on topics such as wine, coffee, beer, honey, cheese, and more. This time around Jason Neu from Great Lakes Distillery explains what makes Great Lakes a "craft" distillery, and wha...

Once again the Milwaukee Brewers prove to be a positive force in the community above affecting the lives of its citizens above and beyond the entertainment on field. Fifteen Wisconsin students will be attending college this fall with the help of the Brewers Community Foundation’s Selig Scholars Program ,  Player Scholarships donated by several Milwaukee Brewers players and the Michael J. An Apple A Day... or year, or however often you buy new electronics

Apple stores have developed a great program to get iPads to teachers. Guys and gadgets, they go together well. The problem is, as we fuel our need for new gadgets, our old ones have to go somewhere.  This can add up quickly to the landfill issue, and it is even worse as many electronics have toxic elements - especially the batteries. Luckily there are programs to recycle or turn in those old electronics for proper disposal or even reuse - the EPA has a list of ways to do this. Well, Apple now has a program where you can turn in your old iPad (most likely due to you getting a new iPad - but maybe a Droid or other OS tablet) at their Apple Stores and they will donate it to Teach For America for us in classrooms where they are increasing as study aids . Now, isn't that a great excuse to upgrade? "But honey, I have to give my old iPad to teachers - you know - to teach kids."
