Great Play: Brewer's Hart Has Heart - Joins Fight Against Heart Disease

I become more and more impressed with the Brewers organization and their involvement in the community and other causes including matching donations for a day, Nyjer Morgan promoting animal adoption, and making Miller Park a LEED certified green building. Now, Brewers right fielder Corey Hart is joining the seemingly endless work of the Brewers by stepping up to the plate in the fight against heart disease and stroke.  Starting with the May 7 game against the Cincinnati Reds, fans can purchase Field Outfield Box tickets to all Brewers Monday home games in a special Corey’s Corner section.  For $35*, fans receive a Field Outfield Box ticket (normally $42), plus a Corey’s Corner T-Shirt, and a portion of the proceeds from each ticket sold will help support the life-saving mission of the American Heart Association!  Tickets are already on sale.

Corey is beyond perfect for this promotion and fundraiser. Not only does he have the perfect name for this cause - he is just missing an 'e' (maybe he should add in the 'e' and then he won't get teased about having the same name as the 'Sunglasses At Night' dude) - but "Corey wears the number ‘1’ for the Crew, a reminder that heart disease including stroke remains the No. 1 killer of men and women across Wisconsin,” said Debra Rollick, Executive Director of the American Heart Association in Southeast Wisconsin.

Major cardiovascular disease, including stroke, causes 31.3% of all deaths in the state of Wisconsin.  Eighty percent of heart disease is preventable through simple lifestyle changes including quitting smoking, exercising more and eating a healthier diet.  For more information, visit www.mylifecheck.org.  The American Heart Association also supports life-saving research into new surgical techniques, drugs and treatments for heart disease, to help people live longer, healthier lives.  In the past five years, the American Heart Association has spent more than $15 million dollars funding 139 new research studies in the state of Wisconsin alone.

DEI Creates Opportunities, Doesn't Lower Requirements

Companies have been being attacked recently for DEI initiatives, such as boycotting, to force them to undo those efforts. These attacks are typically dog whistle coding to cover up discrimination against minorities including women and people of color. The narrative is typically that hiring standards are lowered to include a wider range of employees and that it is a form of reverse discrimination - disadvantaging one group (people that are one or more of white, male, and cisgender). But not only is this not the case, in fact, DEI initiatives are proven to strengthen companies' performance across many metrics - even financially.
