Northwestern Mutual Invests In Milwaukee Neighborhoods

Healthy, educated and compassionate people make a community thrive. That may sound like the Well-Met Code, but instead its the opinion of Northwestern Mutual. Unfortunately, for many within the community, limited access to life's most basic needs detracts from their quality of life. That's why Northwestern Mutual is pleased to announce a program that will lead to improvement in three Milwaukee neighborhoods.

Northwestern Mutual, through its Foundation, is committing more than $725,000 in grants to nonprofits in Amani and Metcalfe Park, two north side neighborhoods, and to the south side neighborhood of Muskego Way. The company is joining federal support that builds resources in both the Amani and Metcalfe Park neighborhoods.
Building and supporting neighborhoods in Milwaukee to achieve community-driven change is a key component of this initiative for Northwestern Mutual. The program creates welcoming, safe and healthy neighborhoods through strong nonprofit partners and the leadership of residents. Each community is collaborating on measures to establish the effectiveness of the program over the coming year.

"We are committed to directing resources that improve the quality of life for more than 70,000 people who live in these neighborhoods," said John Kordsmeier, president, Northwestern Mutual Foundation. "There is a need for access to programs and support systems that increase the pride of all residents and stimulates positive change in their neighborhoods."

One new project resulting from the initiative is a program with Hunger Task Force, which has run food banks across Milwaukee for the past 40 years. The Auer Oasis project will bring daily meal services into the Amani neighborhood at Auer Elementary School during the summer months. Because of a shortage of grocery and convenience stores in the neighborhood, the grant covers all costs to provide access to food for many families in the Amani neighborhood.

Auer Oasis is a partnership between Hunger Task Force, Northwestern Mutual Foundation, Milwaukee Public Schools, Milwaukee County Parks, COA Goldin Center and the Dominican Center for Women.

"Northwestern Mutual approached Hunger Task Force to provide meals in an area that has been historically overlooked," said Sherrie Tussler, executive director, Hunger Task Force. "Our partnership will change the lives of those in Amani by providing nutritious meals to children and their families in need, which impacts all other facets of daily life."

The program will support additional projects focused on academic achievement opportunities, community building and leadership, and safety. Organizations receiving support include:

We may want people outside of Milwaukee to see us as a better place, and they are starting to, but in the end Milwaukeeans have to make Milwaukee a better place. That's why it is so great to see local organizations making an investment right here, organizations like Northwestern Mutual.

Rockerbox Motofest Celebrates 10 Year Event and Fuel Restaurant 20 Year Anniversaries

Rockerbox , the 'premier Wisconsin motorcycle show and street party', is celebrating its 10 year anniversary this year on Saturday August 3rd, 2013 from 11 a.m.- 6 p.m. in front of  Fuel Cafe   Fuel Cafe on Center Street between Humboldt Avenue and Booth Street n Milwaukee. It is free for visitors. The event was started by and is sponsored by Fuel Cafe, a Milwaukee institution that has its own milestone anniversary themselves having been open for 20 years now. The one day festival features a mix of Euro, Japanese and American vintage café racers, choppers, sport bikes, racers, super motos, scooters and sidecars. Last year, the five block show boasted 2,000-3,000 motorcycles and 7,000-8,000 people along with 50+ dealers and vendors of all things motorcycling.  The day includes a bike show, ride-in-show competition, local and regional motorcycle vendors, swap meet, trials demonstration, food and beer.

Tosa Embracing, Placing Skaters In Safe Space

Hey look quick, its kids being active! It is all too common for us to bemoan the sedentary lifestyle of modern children and there are many efforts to increase their level of activity. At the same time, we condemn physical activities we once did as youths with no thought of safety. It is understandable that we want to protect our kids and promote safe practices like wearing of helmets. But how do we reconcile our concerns of safety while also promoting physical activity? One of the best ways is to create and maintain safe spaces for them to do the activities. In Wauwatosa they are doing just that with a new skate park being planned in Hart Park. With the assistance of Tosa Skateboarders United , TSU, and the  Jack Doyle Memorial Challenge Grant funds have been raised to build a new skate park that will provide a dedicated, safe place for skaters in the city to, well, skate.
