Free Prostate Screenings & Free Brewers Tickets May 12

Even though you may not be able to avoid the first number, you can avoid being part of the second if it is detected early. Get checked. We all know men are notoriously bad at taking care of themselves, so sometimes an incentive can help kick us into action. This coming Monday men are given just that opportunity - to be spurred into action to get themselves checked out - in this case for prostate cancer. After the Brewers hopefully hand it to the Yankees this weekend, the Miller Park parking lot will be home to something quite different than tailgating. On Monday, May 12, fans of the Brewers and staying healthy can head on down to the lot where two mobile clinic vehicles will be there to perform prostate cancer screenings for free. Not only is it free, and you don't need an appointment, but you have the chance to get 2 free Brewers tickets. The event, presented by Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin Health Network, Fox 6, the Milwaukee Brewers, ZERO-Prostate Cance...

May Is - When Bikes Help Blood Pressure And Clean Air

Each month there are different causes, awareness efforts, or celebrations that are named and promoted. Often there are a few that work well together, whether planned or not. That is the case with May which, among other promotions, is National Bike Month , National High Blood Pressure Awareness Month and National Clean Air Month. To me these go together so well because by the simple act of biking more you can address the two other issues of reducing your blood pressure and helping keep our air clean with less vehicle emissions. There are lots of resources I could quote or link to to support the many benefits of getting out on your bike whether as a casual ride, exercise, or even as your primary means of transportation. But, whether some want to admit it or not, they all are pretty obvious so I'll leave it to you to accept it. Instead, since this is a Milwaukee blog, I want to do my own list of why you should get out on your bike here.

Support Local, Support Record Store Day 4/19

At this point pretty much any remaining store is a locally owned shop (no the music section at your big box store doesn't count), so support Local , support Record Store Day , a day to celebrate independent record stores on Saturday April 19 2014. Record Store Day was conceived in 2007 at a gathering of independent record store owners and employees as a way to celebrate and spread the word about the unique culture surrounding nearly 1000 independently owned record stores in the US and thousands of similar stores internationally. There are Record Store Day participating stores on every continent except Antarctica - including our very own Milwaukee of course.

Milwaukee Craft Brewing Among Best Again, Coffee Brewing That Is

Anodyne's new cafe in Walker's Point put them at #12 of the 50 best in America We all know Milwaukee has a long and storied history of brewing beer, many time having had the worlds top breweries though the years though which one changed over the years. A recent resurgence of craft or micro-breweries has put us back on the map of beer dominance. In addition to the tradition of brewing beer, Milwaukee has become a fairly recent addition to a similar movement in coffee - what could be considered the craft or micro roasting equivalent of coffee to similar breweries. In Milwaukee names like Anodyne, Colectivo, Stone Creek and Valentines hold a similar place in the coffee world to what Big Bay, Lakefront, Milwaukee and Sprecher have for beer. And just as our local beer brewers have received national recognition, so too are our coffee roasters and their cafes . The Daily Meal just released their America's 50 Best Coffee Shops list and 2 of Milwaukee's roasters/cafes were...

11th Annual Milwaukee Oyster Roast Supports Movember

There are many reactions to losing a loved one, especially from a deadly disease, and one of them is to fight back. Those affected want to find a way to stop it from happening to other people's loved ones so they don't have to have the same experience. This fight can follow many usual ways form walks and rides to raffles and other standard fundraising fare. These are all tried and true methods and as is often sad, there's no reason to reinvent the wheel, however. Sometimes, just sometimes, people are inspired to follow their own path and out of that a unique and rare opportunity presents itself to all of us to get involved in other ways. That is one of the goals of GMM, to inspire fun and funky events geared towards an audience of men, and we love promoting when others step up and do just that. So we are happy to tell you about a great way to support men's health in Milwaukee in two weeks. On Saturday, April 26, the 11th Annual Milwaukee Oyster Roast , one of the m...

For 4th Year Northwestern Mutual, Brewers Help Ronald McDonald House

Ronald McDonald House Milwaukee's Expansion Plans When local businesses and organizations partner together for a cause the effect is often exponentially more than the sum of their parts, That is the case with the fourth year of Northwestern Mutual and the Milwaukee Brewers partnering to support the needs of our local Ronald McDonald House. One in 330 children will be diagnosed with some form of cancer by the time they are 20-years-old. Because treatment plans differ for each of the many forms of the disease, families often have to travel to seek the best care for their child. The costs associated with accommodations, hospitalizations, medication and therapies add up quickly and can be overwhelming for those already battling tough circumstances. To help alleviate the economic burden, Northwestern Mutual, through its Foundation , is partnering with the Brewers Community Foundation for the  Stolen Bases, Happy Faces  campaign. Throughout the 2014 major league baseba...

The Man Way: Beer Makes Your Meat Better, Healthier That Is

For those of us in Milwaukee, unless you are a dedicated winter griller, it is just finally becoming time to dust off the grill and start cooking meat the Man-Way - over an open flame. In one way it is healthier - the fat drips off so the resulting meat is leaner. But in another way it sadly is less healthy, the cheat source can impart  polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and  heterocyclic amines ( HCAs) form in meat when it's cooked at a high temperature (that char marks contain pure HCAs). Nether of these are good for you, both being carcinogens, PAHSs are also in cigarette smoke and car exhaust for example. But it turns out that another manly ingredient can make grilling safer: beer. Marinating your meat in beer is proven to reduce the PAHs, the darker the beer the better.
