Remembering Milwaukee Icon Al Jarreau

I'll always remember that smile The days when we are forced to both mourn and celebrate someone's life are always sad. This week we celebrate the life of Al Jarreau, son of Milwaukee, who passed on February 12. Known most for his music, his unique jazz roots that he stretched to pop and other genres, and a master of scat, during his life his roots and love of Milwaukee were less known. Alas as too often happens, much of his greatest work, behind the scenes in the community, is coming to light. And even after his passing, his legacy continues on in our city.

Dear Mr. President: That's Not How This Works.

One of these guys needs to drop that line any time now "That's not how this works. That's not how any of this works..."  It's the punchline of a recent and very funny commercial, but with the POTUS coming to our city this week, it's also a line that could and should be used on 45. I'll be honest, you can probably guess I have major issues with the policies themselves, but this isn't even about that. I'll let others discuss those on public forums. This isn't so much as what but how. And just as expected, based on his temperament on the election trail and in his business dealings and public persona beforehand, he is not effectively leading our country. Sad.

I Marched With Women For Everyone's Rights

I was proud to wear pink to promote women's rights On Saturday, January 21, 2017 I walked with dozens, maybe a hundred, thousand women in the Madison, WI Women's March to support their rights, and the rights of all. I walked with my wife, with her (our) friends, and coworkers, and with women and men, girls and boys, people from all over the state, from all walks of life. Political views on some of the individual 'rights' in question aside, I just don't get  how anyone can think this type of showing of support for fellow human beings is not a noble, righteous, thing. (Such as a conversation I had with someone who claimed that women wouldn't need these rights if they just stayed home like they did in the past.) While organized by and for women, it was a walk for all, as their Mission/Vision states: "We stand together in solidarity with our partners and children for the protection of our rights, our safety, our health, and our families - recognizing ...

Regift: Donate Instead Of Returning

At the holidays there are times when you can get gifts that you just don't want. It may be a duplicate, the wrong size, or you simply don't like it. There are various things you can do with that item: return it (often with or without a gift receipt), throw it out if not overly valuable, and even regift it. Regifting, passing the gift onto someone else, usually has a stigma attached to it, but is it really so bad? At least the item has a chance to be used instead of ending up in a landfill. But there is another way to look at regifting with a positive spin: donate it. Depending on the item, there are various ways to donate an unwanted gift so that it will have value to someone else, especially others in need.
